This is a badass piece of engineering. A company called Evergreen Aviation is now retrofitting Boing 747's for use as giant flying fire extinguishers. On Monday they used one in Los Angeles (the first time one was used in the US). It worked so well the city of Los Angeles called it back the next day to help with the spreading wildfires.
The storage tanks in the Evergreen hold up to 22,000 gallons of water or fire retardant, about the same volume as an Olympic-sized pool.
